Start with the factory, not a trading house

The clearest signal of who you’re actually buying from is whether spec questions get answered by someone who can change a machine setting, or by someone who has to relay your question to a factory they don’t control. Buying direct from the manufacturer means fewer hand-offs and a shorter distance between your requirement and the production line.

The four questions worth asking upfront

• Is this felt made to order, or picked from stock? Stock felt comes in fixed GSM, width and thickness; made-to-order felt is cut to your specification.
• Can I get a sample before committing to a bulk order? A sample built on the exact line your order will run on is the only way to confirm the spec actually holds at volume, rather than a lab prototype the factory floor can’t reproduce.
• What’s the manufacturing process, and is it in-house? Subcontracted stages are where GSM and density most often drift between the approved sample and the bulk order — see how our felt is actually made.
• How is the order packed for shipment? Ask specifically about palletising and export-ready packing if you’re importing, not just domestic dispatch.

What to have ready when you enquire

Material type, GSM, width, thickness, density, colour, application and quantity — plus your destination country and any documentation your market requires. The more of this you can provide upfront, the faster a manufacturer can turn around an accurate quote instead of a round of clarifying questions.
